Purchase of the Property
When looking to the past 75 years, you have to place it in the context of history and culture. 1951 in the Post-World War II era, the culture was strongly influenced by those events for those who served and for those at home during the war. Church attendance during this period was very high and peaked around 1957.
With growth in population comes the need of more churches. The established Lutheran churches in Sacramento were urban and were started between 1860-1925. The Lutheran Church looked to expand to more rural locations where the city would reach over time. The early churches there were Ascension and Town and Country in 1949 and the Good Shepherd site in 1951.
In February 1951, District President Gaylerd Falde and Dr. Phillip S. Dybvig, Director of Home Missions of the Evangelical Church, and Pastor Aga visited the site. The property at Arden Way and Morse was purchased from Anna and Otto Moller, who became charter members. A suitable parsonage at 3915 Winding Creek Road was secured at that time.
Original financing was provided by the National Board of Home Missions.
